Decision Made - RonO's Ramblings

Jun. 19th, 2008 10:18 am Decision Made

On Monday I accepted the position with Qualcomm. My start date is set for August 18.

We plan on departing the Chicago area sometime between July 25 and August 1, and will stop in Denver for Denvention on the way to San Deigo. I will probably share more of these plans as they become set.

In the mean time, we need to get the house ready to sell, and onto the market. We also need to at least check out San Diego real estate and determine if we are going to try to buy right away, or see about renting for a year or so before making a purchase.

We also have a lot of other stuff to get ready. We will accept any help anyone wishes to offer, and will probably want to get together with friends here and there before we leave.

Our future plans include returning to attend, and probably help with, DucKon each year. We are likely to try to make at least one of the other conventions as many years as possible -- probably Capricon at least in the near term. We will also stay involved in our other main Chicago fannish activity (if you don't know what that is, you probably will after Denver). We will also attend as many Worldcons as we can afford.

More details as they become clear.

Congrats. Let me know if they need an IT manager. I don't particularly want to move to SD, but will if the job is right.

Congratulations! It sounds like both a good job and a way to get away from the Midwest weather all at the same time. (Then return in mid-Winter for Capricon just to remind yourself of what you're not missing.)

The idea of returning for Cap rather than Windy has little to do with which is in the dead of the Chicago winter and which is at the very beginning of winter. It has to do with which one we've been enjoying more recently -- admittedly in part because we keep missing all or part of Windy.

Oh, I didn't even think of it in comparison to Windy. I've enjoyed Windycon when I've been to it, but since there are two other conventions in November that we almost always go to I tend to forget about Windy since I'm not crazy enough to do three conventions in three weeks.

Er ... at least not again, that is.

Congratulations! I hope it all works out well for you :)

Would you like to try to get together for lunch or dinner when you're in Denver?

We have been setting some time aside between visiting mountains and Denvention (a.k.a. Worldcon) to spend time with family and friends. Since the only other friends who might have been in the area are still in San Diego, I think we were planning on getting together at some point.

As plans firm up, I'll give you a shout.

If we tried, I suspect that our wives -- or at least my wife -- would kill us :-)

Not that it wouldn't be fun to do something like that shorter (if I could otherwise keep the wife and kid entertained)

From listening to friends in California, while the real estate market is "better" from a midwest perspective, it's still very over priced. It's unclear if the prices will ever properly drop but if they do, it'll be over the next two years as the market out there continues to crash.

I'm going to envy you the weather out there though. The few times I've been in San Diego it was always beautiful.
