Well Placed Rumors: SciFi Channel to become "Syfy" - RonO's Ramblings

Mar. 16th, 2009 10:15 am Well Placed Rumors: SciFi Channel to become "Syfy"

On the SMOFS list, and then confirmed by a Google search which turned up a New York Times article, seems to indicate that NBC Universal will be changing the name of the SciFi Channel (I think officially just "SciFi") to "Syfy."

The question is: is this a sign that they are further abandoning the Science Fiction fan for the money laden demographic? After all, when they cancel will liked, well written and well done shows like Stargate: Atlantis, but continue to fill their programming with ECW wrestling and cheap, badly done, horror movies, are they going to continue to appeal to the same kind of SF fans that have packed panels at Worldcon and other venus?

I've never been impressed at all with the Scifi Channel's efforts to please "the Science Fiction fan." So at hearing of the latest development, frankly, my dudgeon is quite low.

Well, after "Battlestar Galactica" finishes this week what's left on there for any of use to tune in for?

While IF Eurkea, Dr. Who, or Sarah Jane come back to SciFi SyFy, we might watch them. I think Stargate: Universe will be there until they cancel it.
