As I often end up doing when I’ve got a few minutes to kill, I was just glancing at wikipedia’s what happened on the current day in history. Looking at the entry for June 9 (today as I post), I noticed that the first three entries are:
- 53 – Roman Emperor Nero marries Claudia Octavia
- 62 – Claudia Octavia is executed.
- 68 – Roman Emperor Nero commits suicide, after quoting Homer’s Iliad.
Which leads to my question: is it more than coincidence that Nero was married, executed his wife and committed suicide all on the same day.
In at least one other date coincidences in history I have a partial theory. My suspicion that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died 50 years after signing the Deceleration of Independence probably has to do with the fact that elderly and dying people often hang on until some milestone is past, and both probably wanted to see the country they helped found become 50 years old.
