Change of Broadband - RonO's Ramblings

Feb. 12th, 2011 01:07 pm Change of Broadband

As I already mentioned over on Facebook, I managed to miss giving my DSL provider and updated credit card when mine expired. As a result, and because of spending more than an hour (total) on hold, and the companies change to a strictly business focus, I'm changing over to a regular cable modem (Time Warner in our neighborhood).

One drawback to this is that I'm loosing my two static IP addresses, so I'll have to figure out how to direct the domain registration for the domain that I have been hosting. I'll also have to figure out how best to adjust my network so that I can route packets around correctly.

So, at least until I can get this worked out, I will probably be posting directly to Live Journal instead of to www.ron-oakes.us/wordpress.

On the plus side, I think we'll have more bandwidth (in a real sense) than we could get from DSL, and will be paying about the same or even less per month for it.

I also have to prepare for Monday when I get to make sure that they are happy installing the cable modem with only one of the laptops as a client - and letting me take care of the inside network. But that has to be a more common occurrence than it used to be, doesn't it?

It is. They called me and said "Do you need a cable modem?" I said no, they said it'll be turned on Monday between 3 and 5, call us if you have any issues.... and that was that. Plugged the modem in, everything worked, thank you very much.
