Probable Travel - RonO's Ramblings

Sep. 11th, 2007 09:00 pm Probable Travel

Since our department's usual trainer is having passport issues -- he hasn't gotten his renewed Canadian passport yet, and it is taking 3 to 6 weeks to get an Indian visa in Chicago right now -- I'm almost certainly going to have to travel to Bangalore India the middle of next week to conduct two weeks of training.

While this trip will be a disruption, I would have rather done without, I am looking forward to the trip. This will probably be my longest trip to India yet -- I was there for less than a week in January 2006 and for about a week and a half last October.

One thing about this trip that will be nicer than the previous to, I won't have to fly the Chicago to Delhi non-stop 14 hour flight. At the beginning of the year Motorola broke with its long standing (since 1989 or before) use of American as the preferred carrier, and switched to United. This change has allowed the use of Lufthansa flights from Frankfort to Bangalore without stopping anywhere else in India. This will be nice since the Delhi airport can be a hassle to deal with, and the O'Hare to Delhi flight lands after the last Delhi to Bangalore flight each day, forcing an overnight layover. As an additional bonus of the change in preferred carrier, my flights in and out of Frankfort will be in First Class rather than business class.

My flight plans are as follows:
I leave Chicago at 6:25pm on October 10, arriving in Frankfort at 9:55am on the 11th
I leave Frankfort at 11:35am on October 11, arriving in Bangalore at 11:50pm
I leave Bangalore at 1:55am on October 27, arriving in Frankfort at 7:50am
I leave Frankfort at 12:45pm on October 27, arriving at Chicago at 2:58pm

I'm looking forward to a change of pace, and a chance to do some more touristy stuff on the weekends. But, I'm not sure what is left to see near Bangalore. Last October, I went to three temples near Belur, and (on a different weekend) to Mysore. The guide I've got makes it sound like getting to the better nearby national park would be a multi-day trip (which is also confirmed since my driver last time suggested it as an overnight excursion the same weekend I visited Mysore). Should anyone have any suggestions, I won't object

I'm also suddenly in doubt as to how early I need to get to the airport. Part of me has been thinking 2 hours for international as well as domestic, but then I start doubting that. The problem is that with a 6:25 departure, if I try to get to the airport between 4 and 4:30, I can see Tara and Derrick easily before leaving, but if I need to be there 3 or 4 hours earlier, I might miss them since they have work and school. If someone can remind me what is recommended, I won't mind.

Finally, Tara will be holding down the fort for two and a half weeks. I just hope that Derrick doesn't give her the kind of trouble he can when he's upset and lets her survive. At least I'll have my soft phone with me so that I can call her each morning and see hour her day went before she goes to bed.

For a large airport like O'Hare 3 hours is the recommendation. I tried to leave 2 hours before my flight left Denver International Airport and ended up missing the flight and got put on standby for the next flight to Albuquerque. I don't think they have standby to India ;)

I know you're not going to be that close... but ... go to Agra, see the Taj Mahal. Take pictures for me, it's on my list of things to do before I die :)

I managed to get to Agra on my first trip in January 2006. The pictures can be seen at http://www.ron-oakes.us/photos/thumbnails.php?album=25.
